How to conceive a fl exible and vibrant creative hub starting from a generic industrial building? Transforming the old building structure into a monument, contemporary ruin of the linear production system, extending the grid and tormenting it. The result is a new artifi cial landscape, an attractor, condenser of different activities, a machine itself.
Nowadays the fl exibility of a building is not the structural free plan; it is the possibility to connect and plug everywhere (equipped platform) and to take over the space that is no longer three-dimensional but four-dimensional (double structure). Irrational Factory is self-suffi cient, a city inside the city, the horizontal Downtown Athletic Club: “a social condenser generating and intensifying desirable forms of human intercourse”. (R. Koolhaas, 1978)
In the past the rigid and rational structural grid was made in order to allow a better and more effi cient programming of the productive building. It was perfectly fi tting with the linear production system and allowed the most freedom to the program. Anyhow today’s need is to create an appealing building, a social condenser that could easily mix contemporary production (startups), experimental functions, art, education and recreation. The new productive building is an attractor for investors and the residential neighborhood. The new building takes shape in accordanche to the project area (borders) , new alignments and new fronts are made(one on the entrance side one on the river side).
The collision between the industrial grid and the context creates the Irrational Factory.
